Tech Bulletin: Support of Modems Over 2400 Baud w/ Remote PC
NOVELL TECHNICAL BULLETIN
TITLE: Support of Modems Over 2400 Baud w/ Remote PC
DOCUMENT ID: TB.P.191
DATE: 8/13/87
PRODUCT: NetWare
PRODUCT VERSION: NetWare Remote
SUPERSEDES: NA
SYMPTOM: NA
ISSUE/PROBLEM
The "NetWare Remote" product, as explained in the "NetWare Product
Reference Guide," will support baud rates up to 19.2 as long as the modem
can provide a constant connection at the specified speed.
In tests conducted with a majority of the "high speed" modems, we have
found that these modems cannot provide a constant baud rate. This is
because the modem must constantly adjust and re-configure for line
conditions. The NetWare Remote software expects acknowledgements to be
returned within a specified time frame, or the shell will time out. In
addition, the remote software provides no flow control and will continued
to transmit data whether or not the modem is prepared to receive it.
Please be aware of this situation when configuring systems or when
providing pre-sale information.

ISSUE/PROBLEM
An error has been found when using the COMPSURF.I utility in the NetWare
68 Network Maintenance manual. Revisions 1.00 and 1.01 state on page 2-
1 that running the COMPSURF.I utility without formatting and running only
the surface analysis will not destroy data on the disk. Page 2-18 also
alludes to the same possibility. This is not true and all data will be
lost.
This error should be noted in any Revision 1.00 or 1.01 manual. The
software manual has been corrected in Revision 1.02.
